President Donald Trump is expected to attend the official opening Tuesday of a controversial migrant detention center in the Florida Everglades, which state officials have dubbed the "Alcatraz for alligators."

Two White House officials and a Florida official familiar with the trip confirmed to NBC News that Trump's presence was "likely."

The facility is located on a little-used airstrip in Miami-Dade County, which Governor Ron DeSantis's administration requisitioned using emergency powers to build a shelter for undocumented migrants.

"Alligator Alcatraz" has been touted as the most emblematic example of Florida's desire to become the state most aggressively aligned with Trump's immigration agenda.

Migrant rights advocates and Democrats oppose the detention center, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," because it's portrayed as deliberately cruel to detainees. The site, isolated in the heart of the Everglades and surrounded by swamps infested with alligators and pythons, is described by its promoters as a place difficult to escape, with nature serving as a natural barrier.
