Volcano erupts in Russia for the first time in 600 years

A volcano in Russia has erupted for the first time in 600 years, and experts believe the event may be linked to a recent earthquake.

The Krasheninnikov volcano erupted last weekend and was reportedly the epicenter of a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that prompted tsunami warnings in multiple countries, including the United States, Japan, and the Philippines.

Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), told Russia's state-run news agency RIA: “This is the first historical eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years.”

According to Girina, the eruption may have been triggered by a previous earthquake that struck the Kamchatka region. 

She noted on the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s official Telegram account that the last known eruption of this volcano occurred in 1463.
