A series of small earthquakes has been detected beneath a U.S. volcano that has been showing increasing signs of activity in recent weeks.

Scientists have been closely monitoring Mount Spurr in Alaska over the past few months, as the volcano has been experiencing steady seismic activity.

The seismic unrest around the volcano first began in April 2024 and has intensified since October.

Earlier this week, scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) wrote: "Unrest continues at Mount Spurr volcano. Seismicity remains elevated, with occasional small, shallow volcanic earthquakes detected beneath the volcano over the past day."

"AVO continues monitoring activity at Mount Spurr for signals indicating that the volcano is moving closer to an eruption," they added.
