Scientists bring back to life 10 000-year-old wolf species

A group of scientists says they have successfully revived a species of wolf that vanished more than 10,000 years ago.

Colossal Biosciences, a company specializing in genetic engineering, announced the breakthrough by sharing a video featuring two wolf pups named Romulus and Remus — a nod to the legendary founders of Rome.

"You're hearing the first howl of a dire wolf in over 10,000 years," the company wrote in a post on X. "Meet Romulus and Remus — the world's first de-extinct animals, born on October 1, 2024."

A third pup, named Khaleesi after the Game of Thrones character, was born earlier this year on January 31.

Colossal Biosciences is the same company behind the creation of “woolly mice,” part of its larger effort to eventually bring back the woolly mammoth.

The company explained that the wolf pups were brought back from extinction using advanced genetic modifications. Scientists reconstructed a complete wolf genome by meticulously piecing together ancient DNA extracted from a 13,000-year-old fossilized tooth.
