A dangerous fungus is spreading quickly across Europe as global temperatures continue to rise.

The increasingly warm and humid climate is creating ideal conditions for the spread of fungal-borne diseases, with the latest threat coming from Aspergillus fungi, which pose risks to both humans and animals.

According to Norman van Rhijn, who co-authored a recent study on the subject, the changing climate is making it easier for such fungi to thrive.

The study warns that Aspergillus species can cause severe infections in humans, livestock, and crops.

The filamentous fungal Aspergillus species are the perfect example of a cross-kingdom pathogen," the study states. "They are capable of infecting humans, other mammals, birds, honeybees, and corals. They spoil crops both before and after harvest and make them unsafe for consumption due to the production of mycotoxins."
