Escape and state of emergency with the numerous earthquakes in Santorini

The Greek island of Santorini is still shaking. Tourists and locals have already fled to the mainland, while emergency services on site are ready to intervene. An earthquake was even felt in Athens.

Daily tremors since early February have driven tourists and thousands of residents to flee the Aegean island of Santorini. More than half of the island's inhabitants have already taken to the air or the ferry to seek refuge elsewhere in Greece, in the hope that their island will withstand the earth's tremors.

Between 1:23pm on February 10 and the morning of February 11, there were 8 earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4 on the Richter scale, according to the US Seismological Institute (USGS). The ERT television channel even reported a magnitude 5.3 earthquake, felt as far away as Athens, more than 200km away. Nearly 13,000 earthquakes have been detected since January 26, 2025.

The Cyclades are under a state of emergency until March 3. Tented hospitals and specialized crevasse teams have arrived on site in anticipation of a larger earthquake. It's not yet known whether the origin of this telluric episode is volcanic or tectonic.
