“Greenland is already occupied by the USA” (military expert)
Military experts and Danish authorities claim that Washington has long exercised almost total military control over the island.
150 military personnel are based on Greenland, an autonomous territory under the administration of the Kingdom of Denmark, with 57,000 inhabitants and almost 2.2 million square kilometers.
The current US president had already mentioned his idea of occupying the island in 2019, and a few days ago he relaunched the project, without ruling out economic or military pressure to achieve his goal.
“In the interest of national security and freedom around the world, the United States considers ownership and control of Greenland an absolute necessity,” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In 2023, Washington and Copenhagen signed a non-negotiable 10-year security treaty allowing US troops to be stationed throughout Danish territory.
Peter Viggo Jakobsen, an analyst at the Defense Academy's Institute for Strategic and War Studies, argues that “if you want to put it as clearly as possible, Greenland is already de facto occupied by the United States”.
