Meghan makes a fool of herself in a new Netflix series
Meghan Markle's new series on Netflix confirms the criticism on the Sussex couple's venality, their constant quest for media visibility and their difficulty in offering relevant and authentic content despite their considerable resources.
Meghan Markle's new cooking series on Netflix, modestly named ‘With love, Meghan’, has drawn the Anglo-Saxon press' wrath, highlighting the Sussex couple's relentless quest for profit and notoriety.
Bloated egos
The series, launched on Netflix on 4 March, follows Meghan Markle as she gardens and cooks in California, and has been widely denounced as an "exercise in narcissism" by the Daily Telegraph. The Times, meanwhile, highlights the incongruity of seeing the 43-year-old ex-actress showing off "her extreme wealth and incredibly exclusive lifestyle as if they were accessible to everyone".
Simplistic staging and script
The series is filmed in a luxury property rented for the occasion, with two immaculate kitchens, which adds to the fake aspect of the production. The Daily Telegraph cruelly sums up the inanity of the concept: "Meghan invites people to her pretend home. They tell her how great she is. This goes on for eight episodes."
Hollow and pointless
The American magazine Variety described the series as an "ego trip that isn't worth it", criticising the couple's tendency to think that "interest (from the public) will naturally follow them", no matter what they do. The press agree on the lack of substance in the content, judging that there's "not enough to justify the length" of the series.
Money, money, money
Since leaving the British royal family in 2020, Harry and Meghan have lost their royal grants. They then set about monetising their story at great expense, including an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and a $100 million deal with Netflix for the docu-series ‘Harry & Meghan’.
A difficult repositioning
The couple are now trying to reposition themselves in a less controversial way, but this new approach seems to be generating less media interest. The ‘With love, Meghan’ series appears to be a clumsy attempt to maintain their relevance and income, while moving away from the controversies that marked their departure from the royal family.
The Sussexes' 5-year contract with Netflix comes to an end this year. It's not certain that the platform will wish to extend the adventure...
