UK shuts down last coal power plant
The United Kingdom is ending its production of electricity from fossil fuels.
The last coal plant, located in Ratcliffe-on-Soar, England, ceased operations this Monday, marking the end of 142 years of reliance on this fossil fuel, notorious for its heavy environmental impact.
"We owe generations a debt of gratitude as a country," said Minister for Energy Michael Shanks.
The use of coal became widespread in England during the 18th century, particularly during the Industrial Revolution with the invention and the emergence of the steam engine which required coal to be powered.
"This is truly a remarkable day because, after all, Britain built its entire strength on coal — the Industrial Revolution itself," said Lord Deben, the longest-serving environment secretary.
