Italians are "panicking about the price of espresso"
Italians are worried about paying more for their traditional espresso as coffee prices continue to soar in recent months.
While Italy is renowned for its affordable prices for coffee-based drinks, locals are not hiding their concerns about a possible rise in the price of espressos in bars.
"Everyone is nervous, afraid and panicking about the price of espresso", said Luigi Morello, president of the Italian Espresso Institute.
An espresso usually costs 1 euro 20, while a cappuccino usually costs 1 euro 50, but these prices are likely to rise in a country where drinking coffee is a religion.
According to estimates by the consumer association Assoutenti, Italians and foreign tourists consume 6 billion coffees a year, which generates roughly 7 million euros in revenue for the country.
However, poor harvests due to global warming will now force Italians to pay 2 euros for an espresso. Since 2021, Assoutenti has found that the price of espressos has already risen by 15%, mainly because of the cost of electricity.
