Trump now wants to impose sanctions on Putin as well
Donald Trump seemed close to moving into the Kremlin in recent weeks, but the U.S. president's love for his Russian counterpart seems to have been short-lived. After all, the US president is suddenly threatening new sanctions against the country that is “firmly bashing Ukraine.” Is a new, high-profile change of course imminent?
US President Donald Trump has said he is “strongly considering imposing large-scale sanctions” and tariffs against Russia until a cease-fire and peace agreement is reached with Ukraine.
Trump said he was considering the move because “Russia is absolutely ‘crushing’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now.”
Trump's comments already mark a solid change in direction. Since taking office, he has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and accused the Ukrainian leader of not wanting peace with Russia. Trump even claimed that Ukraine started the war. In addition, the U.S. president was caught in numerous other lies and repeatedly spread false information regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Just hours after his threatening language toward Putin, however, Trump emphasized in the press that he “trusted” Putin.
