‘This is what happens when someone appeases barbarians’ (Polish PM Tusk)
On Saturday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk strongly condemned Russia's new attacks on Ukraine on X. He subtly refers to the new attitude of the US towards Vladimir Putin.
On Friday, Ukraine was hit by a massive attack by Russian drones and missiles of all types. The energy supply and the civilian infrastructure of the port city of Odessa were among the areas that suffered greatly. The new wave of Russian attacks cannot be seen separately from the decision of the United States to stop providing intelligence and military aid to Ukraine.
‘This is what happens when someone appeases barbarians,’ wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X, in response to the new attacks. ’More bombs, more aggression, more victims. Another tragic night in Ukraine.’
Of all NATO countries, including the US, Poland spends the highest percentage of its gross domestic product on defence: in 2024, that percentage was already 4.12% of Polish GDP, compared to 3.38% for the US. Poland wants to continue investing in defence and would like to have access to nuclear weapons. Poland is in talks with France about the deployment of French nuclear weapons to protect Europe.
